Best eSIM for France 2026: Prices, Networks and Plans Compared

Using a France eSIM at a Paris cafe

Last updated: October 30, 2026. All prices were checked on each provider's official website on October 30, 2026. BitJoy is our own store, and we label it wherever it appears in this comparison.

The best eSIM for France for most travellers is a 5GB-10GB plan on Orange, France's top-rated mobile network, bought and installed before you fly. It costs around $8-$12, works the moment you land at Charles de Gaulle or Orly, and keeps working on the Paris metro, the TGV and in the countryside. If France is one stop on a longer trip, a Europe eSIM that covers every country on your route is better value, and if you live in the EU you may not need an eSIM at all.

Key takeaways

  • Best overall: BitJoy France 10GB / 30 days, $11.99 on Orange 5G with hotspot.
  • Best for France plus other countries: a Europe plan that lists all of them (BitJoy Europe 10GB / 31 days, $10.99).
  • Unlimited plans cost $59-$74 for 30 days; most visitors use far less than 10GB.
  • EU residents can usually roam in France at no extra cost under "roam like at home".
  • French prepaid SIMs require ID at the point of sale; a travel eSIM does not.

How We Compared France eSIMs

For each provider we checked current prices on its own website on October 30, 2026, converted fixed plans to a price per GB, recorded the French networks it lists, and checked hotspot rules, unlimited-plan limits, phone-number options and when the plan starts. We have not published our own speed tests in this guide; speeds on any travel eSIM depend mainly on the French network it uses and where you are. BitJoy is our own store, and we point out where another provider is the better fit.

What to Check Before Buying a France eSIM

  1. Networks: which local networks the plan uses. More than one network means fewer dead spots outside cities.
  2. Data and validity: match the data to your trip length. A 30-day plan gives you room if your dates change.
  3. When the plan starts: at purchase, at installation or at first connection in the country. Plans that start on arrival let you buy early.
  4. Hotspot: whether you can share data with a laptop, tablet or travel partner, and whether there is a daily hotspot cap.
  5. Unlimited rules: daily high-speed limits, the speed after the limit, and fair-use terms.
  6. Phone number: most travel eSIMs are data-only. Decide upfront if you need local calls or SMS.
  7. Top-ups and support: how easily you can add data, and how to reach support if the eSIM does not connect.
  8. Refunds: what happens if your trip is cancelled before you install the eSIM.

For France, the key checks are Orange or several networks in the list if you are leaving Paris, and whether every country is covered if you are buying a Europe plan.

Is my phone compatible?

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Most iPhones from the XS and XR onwards, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, and Google Pixel 3 and later support eSIM, but some regional models do not. Dialling *#06# shows an EID number if your phone supports eSIM. If your phone is locked to your home carrier, ask them to unlock it before you travel.

French Mobile Networks: Orange vs SFR vs Bouygues vs Free

France has four networks. The telecom regulator ARCEP publishes an annual quality survey based on around a million measurements. In its 2025 results:

Network ARCEP 2025 highlights Good to know
Orange First on most indicators nationwide; 91% "perfect" calls Best choice for countryside, mountains and coast
Bouygues Telecom Narrowly ahead of Orange in dense urban areas Strong in Paris and big cities
SFR Close behind on most measures Solid in cities
Free Mobile Fourth on most measures Cheapest local plans; thinner rural coverage

On the Paris metro, ARCEP measured call success of 96-97% for all four operators, and the whole metro has had 4G coverage since 2020. Outside cities, the network matters more: in Provence, the Alps, the Dordogne, Brittany or Normandy, an Orange-based plan gives you the best chance of signal.

Coverage Outside Paris: Region by Region

Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nice and other big cities have fast 4G and 5G on all four networks. Outside the cities, coverage depends much more on the network and the terrain:

Region What to expect Tip
French Riviera and Provence Strong coverage in towns and along the coast; weaker in hill villages and gorges such as the Verdon Download offline maps for drives through the hills
French Alps and Pyrenees Good in ski resorts and valley towns; patchy on high passes and hiking trails Save the 112 emergency number and check the weather before hikes
Normandy and Brittany Good in towns; gaps along remote coastline and rural roads An Orange-based plan gives the widest rural coverage
Loire Valley and Dordogne Fine in towns and at major chateaux; weaker in the countryside between villages Download the route before you set off
TGV and regional trains Generally usable, with drops in tunnels and some rural stretches Save tickets and entertainment offline

If you are planning a road trip, a 10GB or 20GB plan with hotspot is the safest option, because navigation and music streaming add up over long drives.

France-Only or Europe eSIM?

If you only visit France, a France plan is usually cheaper per GB. If France is one stop on a longer trip, a single Europe plan saves you buying and installing several eSIMs.

  • France + Spain, Italy, Germany or Belgium: all in the EU, so most Europe plans cover them.
  • France + Switzerland or the UK: neither is in the EU, and many Europe eSIMs leave them out. Check the country list. BitJoy's Europe 10GB / 31-day plan includes Switzerland and the UK.
  • Monaco and Andorra are often missing from Europe plans, so check them if they are on your route.

EU Visitors: Do You Even Need an eSIM?

If your mobile plan is from an EU country, the "roam like at home" rules usually let you use your normal minutes, texts and data in France at no extra cost, within your operator's fair-use limits. You only need an eSIM if your home allowance is small or your operator applies a low fair-use cap.

Visitors from the UK, US, Canada, Australia and Asia are not covered by these rules and usually pay roaming fees, so a travel eSIM is normally much cheaper.

How Much Data Do You Need in France?

Activity Approximate data use
Google Maps or Citymapper navigation 5-10MB per hour
WhatsApp messages and photos 20-50MB per day
Instagram or TikTok scrolling 100-300MB per hour
Video call 300-500MB per hour
HD streaming 1-3GB per hour
Trip Suggested data BitJoy plan
Weekend in Paris 1-3GB 3GB / 30 days ($6.49)
One week 3-5GB 5GB / 30 days ($8.49)
Two weeks or a road trip 5-10GB 10GB / 30 days ($11.99)
Working remotely 15GB+ 20GB ($18.49) or 50GB ($28.99)

Getting Around Paris and France With Your Phone

Paris phone essentials: metro 4G, offline maps, train tickets and contactless metro
  • Metro and RER: 4G across the whole Paris metro since 2020, so you stay online between stations.
  • Paying for the metro: Paris is rolling out bank-card payment at the gates in stages during 2026, starting with Orly on metro line 14 and the Montmartre funicular. Navigo Easy and the Île-de-France Mobilités app remain the main options at most stations.
  • Trains: book TGV and regional trains in the SNCF Connect app and save tickets offline.
  • From the airport: read our guide on how to get from CDG to Paris.
  • Offline maps: download Paris and the regions you will visit in Google Maps.

Calls, a French Number and WhatsApp

Travel eSIM vs French prepaid SIM compared
  • Travel eSIMs like BitJoy are data-only. WhatsApp, iMessage and FaceTime still work with your usual number.
  • Keep your home SIM active in dual-SIM mode (with its data roaming off) to receive bank SMS codes.
  • If you need a French number, choose an operator plan with calls such as Orange Travel's unlimited plan, or a French prepaid SIM. French prepaid SIMs must be registered with ID at the point of sale. See our France SIM card guide.
  • In an emergency, dial 112.

Long Stays, Students and Remote Workers

If you are staying in France for more than a month, for study, work or a long holiday, compare a larger travel eSIM with a French mobile plan.

  • Up to six months, data only: BitJoy's France 50GB / 180-day plan ($34.99) is simple and needs no French bank account or ID registration.
  • Heavy use or working remotely: choose 50GB / 30 days ($28.99), or use a daily plan on your heaviest days.
  • Staying a year or more: a French operator plan may be cheaper long-term, but it requires ID and often a French address or bank account.
