Best Time to Visit
Best time to visit. Wildflowers blanket the Atlas Mountains, temperatures are ideal, and the desert isn't scorching. Good for Marrakech, Fez, and the Sahara.
Very hot inland (40°C+ in Marrakech and the Sahara). The coastal cities (Essaouira, Agadir) are cooled by Atlantic breezes, Good for beach holidays.
Second best season. Temperatures drop to comfortable levels, crowds thin from summer, and the Sahara is warm but not brutal. Date harvest season in the south.
Cool in the north, cold in the Atlas Mountains (snow possible). The Sahara is pleasantly warm (20-25°C days). Fewer tourists, lower prices, and atmospheric light for photography.
Top Things to Do
Sahara Desert, Merzouga
The iconic orange sand dunes of Erg Chebbi rising 150m high. Camel trek at sunset, sleep in a Berber camp under billions of stars, and wake to sunrise over the dunes.
Marrakech Medina
Djemaa el-Fna square transforms from a food market by day to a carnival of snake charmers, storytellers, and musicians at night. The souks behind it are a labyrinth of spices, leather, and lanterns.
Fez Medina
The world's largest car-free urban area and one of the best-preserved medieval cities on Earth. The Chouara Tannery, where leather has been dyed in the same stone vats since the 11th century, is extraordinary.
Chefchaouen (The Blue City)
A mountain town painted almost entirely in shades of blue. Every alley is a photo. The medina is calm and easy to navigate compared to Fez or Marrakech, good for a slow day.
Atlas Mountains & Toubkal
North Africa's highest peak (4,167m) is achievable for fit walkers in 2 days from the village of Imlil. Berber villages, mule trails, and views over Morocco to the Sahara.
Essaouira
A breezy Atlantic coastal town with white and blue ramparts, a fishing port, and excellent wind for kitesurfing. Jimi Hendrix visited in 1969 and supposedly was inspired to write Castles Made of Sand here.
Moroccan Food & Tagine
Slow-cooked lamb or chicken tagine with preserved lemon and olives, bastilla (pigeon pie with almonds and sugar), harira soup, and fresh-baked khobz bread. Finish with mint tea poured from a height.
Ait Benhaddou Kasbah
A UNESCO-listed fortified village on the old caravan route. Used as a filming location for Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and Lawrence of Arabia. A dramatic red mud-brick city rising from the valley.
