Top Things to Do

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The El Castillo pyramid is so precisely aligned that during equinoxes, a shadow serpent descends its steps. Go at opening to beat the crowds.
Cenotes, Yucatán
Thousands of crystal-clear underground sinkholes across the Yucatán Peninsula. Swimming, snorkelling, and diving in turquoise water beneath stalactite-lined caves. Cenote Ik Kil and Dos Ojos are worth seeing.
Mexico City
A large megalopolis with excellent museums (Frida Kahlo, Anthropology), remarkable food markets, the ancient Teotihuacán pyramids, and one of the world's most lively street food scenes.
Tulum
Clifftop Mayan ruins overlooking the Caribbean Sea, followed by crystal-clear beach swims. The town has grown into a boutique wellness and eco-resort hub with excellent restaurants.
Oaxaca
Mexico's culinary and cultural capital. Mole, mezcal, colourful colonial streets, and the best Día de Muertos celebrations in the country. Monte Albán ruins sit above the city.
Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre)
A canyon system four times the size of the Grand Canyon in northern Mexico. The El Chepe train ride through the Sierra Madre mountains is one of the world's great rail journeys.
Cancún & Riviera Maya
White sand beaches, turquoise Caribbean water, and easy access to Chichén Itzá, Tulum, and cenotes. The hotel zone is party central; Playa del Carmen is more laid back.
Tacos & Street Food
Al pastor from a trompo, carnitas from a giant copper pot, tlayudas in Oaxaca, elotes on the street. Mexican street food is UNESCO-listed and the best in the world. Budget around 5 AUD (or equivalent) for a meal.
